Kareri Lake Trek – An Ultimate Guide for Backpackers

INTRODUCTION:

Located in the Dhauladhar range and nine kilometres from Dharamshala, Kareri Lake, also known as Kumarwah Lake, is a body of water. At a height of 2,934 metres, this small freshwater glacial lake makes for a picturesque setting.

Since the moisture is so clear, you can usually see the lake bed, which is a wonderful experience in and of itself. Another lovely gift this lake offers is the reflection of the sky above. Kareri Lake is a very picturesque outdoor activity because it is surrounded by stunning mountain ranges.

This same trek offers you contrasting meadows as well as numerous waterfalls and bubbling streams. Shepherd villages also add to the charm and provide additional visual pleasure. The birds of the area will sing lovely melodies along your trail, as if that weren’t enough already.

Kareri Lake is a stunning, undiscovered trail that makes for a lovely weekend adventure.

Concerning Kareri Lake Trek

You’ll be surrounded by stunning bird species as your tour takes you through verdant mountains where you can fully appreciate the subtropical pine forests.

Waterbody from the Minkiani Peak in the Dhauladhar range and glacial melting supply the water for Kareri Lake. Your hiking companion along the trail will be the stream, also known as the Nyund river.

Although there isn’t a lot of tourism at this lake, I think that’s what makes it more charming. The Gujjars and Gaddis from nearby villages frequently visit this location because of the numerous and expansive pastures close to the lake. You can take in the breathtakingly dense conifers and some unusual perennial flowers while hiking.

Optimum season to invade Kareri

Even though the lake has been mostly frozen throughout the year, it is still worth experiencing the beauty and serenity in the winter. If you’re looking for peace and quiet in the winter, Kareri also has the most of it. Before the monsoon season, from March to July, and then from September to December, you can go on a wonderful weekend hike (i.e., before the frigid temperatures).

The monsoon season should be avoided as it can be difficult to navigate the mountains during that time.

Daily Plan for a Common Itinerary

You will travel through stunning, verdant mountains on this two-day trek, arriving at a wonderful, remote lake with the best views. With the exception of the final section to the lake, where the trail is poorly marked, the hike is generally manageable.

Day 0: Arriving at Kareri Village, the base

Travel to Dharamshala overnight by leaving late at night from Delhi. You’ll have plenty of time to explore the area and prepare for the trek if you do it this way.

First day: Rioti Village to Kareri Village

You will need to trek for five hours today to get to your overnight camp. The path has been clearly marked with steps and stones by the local villagers, making it convenient to travel. Remember, though, that the trail does get quite steep at times.

Ready to travel, there will be a body of water that is both beautiful and a fantastic source of water. Starting with pine and broadleaf forests, the trail is breathtaking. The area is renowned for its abundance of birds, which serves as a constant source of companionship.

The Nolli bridge, a notable highlight of the hike, will also be crossed by you. There is a little shack near this bridge that is a great place to stop for some chai and Maggi. The trail returns to the forests after crossing the bridge.

You will eventually arrive at your camp for the night after crossing a second bridge over the Nyund river/nallah around halfway through the trek. Additionally, there is a shack here, and food provides comfort. The shacks here rent out tents and other camping supplies.

Keep the environment clean by carrying your own water bottles.

Second day: Rioti to Kareri Lake

Individuals must get started in the morning. It will be a long day, so try to conserve as much daylight as you can. The trail’s second half will feature rocky grasslands along the Nyund river (nallah? ), which will serve as your guide again for the remaining portion of the journey.

You’re going to face some difficulties during your final push period because the lake is so close to the snow line. Overall, you’ll travel 4.5 kilometres, which, depending on your level of fitness, should take you 5 to 6 hours. However, it will take you 1.5 hours of hiking to get to the lake. You’ll even see on the way to the lake

Outcome

For those who want to try something different and avoid the more well-known treks of Kheerganga, Triund, etc., the Kareri Lake trek is a lovely weekend adventure. This off-the-beaten-path journey involves some moderate difficulty and undoubtedly requires you to work for your sights.
